But learning the basics can go a long way toward smoother planning, clearer communication, and stronger outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s your cheat sheet to speaking \u201cEvent AV\u201d like a pro:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udf9b<\/strong> Audio Terms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mixer (Audio Console)<\/strong> \u2013 The brain of the audio system. It controls what\u2019s heard through the speakers and allows adjustments to volume levels, EQ (equalization), and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wireless Lav\/Lapel Mic<\/strong> \u2013 A small, clip-on microphone often used by speakers or presenters. It\u2019s hands-free and discreet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handheld Mic<\/strong> \u2013 Exactly what it sounds like \u2014 a mic held in the hand, often used for Q&As or performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Line Array<\/strong> \u2013 A stack of speakers arranged vertically for consistent, powerful sound coverage across a large space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feedback<\/strong> \u2013 The high-pitched squeal you never want to hear. It occurs when sound from speakers loops back into a microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83c\udfa5<\/strong> Video Terms<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Switcher<\/strong> \u2013 A device that allows you to switch between multiple video sources (such as a laptop or camera) in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projection Mapping<\/strong> \u2013 The art of using projectors to transform physical spaces (like walls or sets) with immersive video content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PJ <\/strong>\u2013 Another way to say a projector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confidence Monitor or DSM (down stage monitor)<\/strong> \u2013 A screen placed on or near the stage, facing the presenter, to display slides, speaker notes, or timers\u2014so they don\u2019t have to turn around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMAG (Image Magnification)<\/strong> \u2013 A live video feed (usually of a speaker) displayed on big screens to help the audience see clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udca1<\/strong> Lighting Terms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Uplighting<\/strong> \u2013 Lights placed on the floor that shine upward on walls or columns. Ideal for adding ambiance and color to the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gobo<\/strong> \u2013 A stencil or template inserted into a lighting fixture to project a shape, pattern, or logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wash Light<\/strong> \u2013 A soft, even light that \u201cwashes\u201d a space in color or white light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spotlight<\/strong> \u2013 Focused lighting used to highlight a presenter or specific area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\udde0<\/strong> Tech Crew Roles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A1 (Audio Lead)<\/strong> \u2013 They manage all things sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A2 (Audio Assistant) \u2013<\/strong> Supports the A1, usually handling microphones and backstage cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V1<\/strong> (Video Lead<\/strong>) \u2013  Oversees video playback, switchers, and screen feeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L1 (Lighting Designer)<\/strong> \u2013 Designs and runs the lighting for your event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PM (Project Manager)<\/strong> \u2013 Your go-to for everything. They coordinate the crew, timelines, gear, and run of show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TD (Technical Director)<\/strong> \u2013 Oversses the technical aspects of an event, overseeing the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of all technical equipment, such as sound, lighting, video, and stage design. They ensure the event runs smoothly and meets the production\u2019s requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\uddf0<\/strong> Other Useful Lingo<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Load-In \/ Load-Out<\/strong> \u2013 The setup and teardown process for AV gear. Time it right \u2014 it\u2019s not a quick job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheeseborough<\/strong> \u2013 It is a type of pipe clamp that is used to fix equipment or scenic elements to truss or other pipe structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaff Tape<\/strong> \u2013 A heavy-duty, cloth-backed adhesive tape, that is strong yet has easy-to-remove adhesive and is a non-reflective matte finish. It\u2019s known for its versatility in securing cables, labeling equipment, and generally keeping things tidy and safe on events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rigging<\/strong> \u2013 The process of hanging gear like lights or speakers from trusses or ceilings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Backline<\/strong> \u2013 Musical instruments and gear like drum kits or amps provided for performers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run of Show (ROS)<\/strong> \u2013 The master schedule detailing every cue, segment, and presenter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
